I started the 80's moving to a more suburban town in NYC and as a kid got into all the early 80's music and culture as most kids do. Click here to see the patron-saint of all Generation X kids. We didn't get cable till the 90's (thanks Time Warner!), so instead of growing up with MTV, I grew up with 45's. Each weekend would mean a trip to "Record World" and a new vinyl obsession. My brother still has nightmares about the same songs being played over and over.

In school, we had a strange environment as every lunch hour featured dancing. It's extremely strange as I think back on it, but they'd let you eat and then force you into the center of the cafeteria to dance to 45's other kids had brought in. I realize now it was to tire the kids out, but for me it was exposure to new music.

By 1985, the most popular movie in the country was about time travel and in a way I went off to visit 60's for a few years. As hair band music got popular, I gravitated toward 60's music, discovering the Beatles had more albums than the one I'd been playing since I was 4. Some didn't even skip! All the older bands seemed to have a purpose deeper then Poison's mantra of getting laid, dressing like a chick and drinking till you can't remember your name. I'd stay up all night calling in requests to WNBC AM radio and watched predominantly 60's TV shows. Before long, I'd turned into a pissed off teenager who was sad he'd never be on Laugh In. If you didn't want to talk about 60's music, 60's television or the 80's Mets…basically you were talking to yourself. That's when I started spending a lot of time on my own, turning little hooks I'd had in my head since childhood into actual structured songs. I went off into my own little world to, as I figured out after the fact, "home school" myself in music.

In the most triumphant 80's Media Player Of Gnarly Grooves you'll find some of the tracks you'd have heard coming from the my walls. They are not the best tracks of the 80's or even all from the 80's..it's just the 80's choices of DJ Nik!
